Lakewood Introduces a Zero Tax Levy Increase

It seems everyone is fed up with taxes. The members of the Township Committee and I take your comments about taxes and the quality of life in Lakewood very, very seriously. The decisions we make, as a result, always have you and your wishes in mind.

One question people have is, “Did my taxes go up or did they go down?” The Township Committee and I recently introduced a budget with a Zero Tax Levy increase, meaning no increase in the taxes. In fact, our proposed budget reduces spending by a nominal amount. So why did some people see a raise in their taxes when the overall tax levy of the town remained flat? Before I explain that paradox, let’s talk about what we have to work with.

Public Notice is hereby given that the Lakewood Township Committee Meeting scheduled for May 6, 2010, is cancelled. This meeting has been rescheduled to be held on Thursday, May 13, 2010, to begin at 6:30 PM, at which time the governing body shall adopt a Resolution to retire into Closed Session for the purpose of discussing qualified exemptions from the Open Public Meetings Act. The Township Committee will hold a Regular Meeting after the Closed Session, beginning at 7:30 PM to conduct general business. This meeting will be held in the Lakewood Municipal Building, Auditorium, 231 Third Street, Lakewood, New Jersey. Formal action may be taken.

Ads in the newspapers, electronic road signs, press releases, posters, letters to the editor—all notices reminding us about the importance of the Census, and that we must participate to keep our seats in the House of Representatives and bring our fair share of the federal dollars to Lakewood.

What if it seems as though everyone else received the Census form and you didn’t? What should you do? First of all, if you have received any correspondence in the mail from the Census Bureau, such as a letter saying the Census form is coming, you can call 1-866-872-6868 and use the Census Mail ID found on the correspondence.

The Lakewood Downtown Merchants’ Commission, a committee that focuses on improvements for downtown Lakewood, is meeting Wednesday, February 10, 2010, 10:00 a.m., in Room A of the Lakewood Municipal Building, Third Street, Lakewood. The public is invited.

Topics for this meeting include discussions about cooperation with UEZ concerning revitalization; proposed parking changes, review of maps, status of parking lot developments from UEZ, and reading of letter to Township Committee requesting zoning changes; proposals for signage rules; request for bicycle racks in parking areas, new loitering deterrents, and more UEZ officer presence in the downtown; and pedestrian crossing issues.

The Township of Lakewood Township Committee will hold a public hearing to discuss the Lakewood draft amended Plan Endorsement Petition on Thursday, January 14, 2010 at 7:30 pm. This public hearing will be located at the Municipal Building, 231 Third Street in Lakewood. The Township Committee will consider adoption of the draft amended Plan Endorsement Petition.

Lakewood is actively seeking public input regarding the draft Lakewood Plan Endorsement Petition. The public is invited to provide oral comments at the public hearing or submit written comments. Written comments related to the draft Petition will be accepted at the public hearing and may be submitted to the Township Clerk, Lakewood Township Municipal Building, 231 Third Street, Lakewood, New Jersey 08701 by January 25, 2010.

The draft Amended Plan Endorsement Petition is available for public inspection in the Township Clerk’s office located at the Lakewood Township Municipal Building, 231 Third Street, Lakewood, New Jersey 08701 and the petition be viewed between the hours of 9:00 am and 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. The Township of Lakewood Township Committee’s will continue its community visioning public hearings to discuss the Township’s Lakewood Smart Growth Plan on Thursday, October 29, 2009 at 6:00 pm. This public hearing will be held at the Lakewood High School Commons located at 855 Somerset Avenue in Lakewood. The Township Committee will consider adoption of the draft Lakewood Smart Growth Plan.

The Lakewood Township Committee is actively seeking public input regarding the Township’s draft Lakewood Smart Growth Plan. The public is invited to provide oral comments at the public hearing or submit written comments. Written comments related to the draft Lakewood Smart Growth Plan will be accepted at the public hearing and may be submitted to the Township Clerk by October 30, 2009.

The public is advised that the Township Committee of the Township of Lakewood will hold a public hearing on Thursday, August 6, 2009 for purposes of review and endorsement of the Housing Plan Element and Fair Share Plan of the Township’s Master Plan.  The Housing Plan Element and Fair Share Plan presents the Township’s proposed approach and mechanisms to address its fair share affordable housing obligation consistent with the regulations of the New Jersey Council on Affordable Housing as specified in N.JA.C. 5:97-1 et seq.

The hearing will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the Municipal Building, 231 Third Street, Lakewood.  Members of the public are invited and encouraged to attend and be heard.

The report entitled: “Housing Plan Element and Fair Share Plan” is on file for public inspection during normal business hours in the office of the Township Clerk located at Municipal Building, 231 Third Street, Lakewood.
